Not quite a real estate story…

A few weeks ago, I was riding home in a bike lane when a passenger in a parked car suddenly opened the door without looking.

I never saw it coming.

Seconds later I was lying in the street, bloody and in pain, looking up at a police officer who was looking down at me.

"Don't move," he said. "EMS is on its way."

Fortunately, I was wearing a helmet.

When you're lying in the street, looking around you and feeling vulnerable, time slows down. There's no past or future, only the present, and you notice things you might otherwise miss.

One thing I noticed was just how many good people were around me.

It was hard to be angry with the couple that hit me. Nice people that did a stupid thing… horrified, apologetic, tending to my wounds and offering to take me and my bike home. The police officer was calm and compassionate. The EMS team was caring and efficient. And my good friend, thanks to my frantic wife who knew he was nearby, dropped everything and came to help.

Eventually, I was able to get up. My limbs were working. I hadn't lost consciousness. I was bruised, bloody, and sore, but considering what could have happened, I was incredibly lucky.

It's hard to feel grateful in a situation like that, but I did.

I was wearing a helmet, and it could have been so much worse.

We spend a lot of time reading about what's wrong with the world. Lying on the pavement that day, I had a different view.

So, if there's something I can leave you with this summer, it's this:

  • Be kind.
  • Look out for one another.
  • Look before you open a car door.
  • Wear a helmet.

Tomorrow isn't guaranteed, and life can change in an instant.

As summer gets underway, with vacations, barbecues, long weekends, and time with family and friends, I hope you slow down enough to appreciate the people around you.

Have a wonderful summer and stay safe.
